That is what enables us to describe, and require for that matter, the educational importance of exposure to great works of art. And now we come to the last of our three kinds of quality: force. Force has always been classified, correctly, as a part of physics, specifically as that which produces a change of motion. But there is another side to it which is more relevant to our present purposes, a qualitative side. We have always thought of qualities as passive, and so many of them are. Color for instance is a passive quality, though I would argue for the so-called 'passive' qualities that they have a certain minimal impact.

I should conclude by adding that even the color-blind person sees something, a quality, 'out there'. I submit that when an observer notes that the leaves of a tree have turned from green to red, he knows something about that tree and can from this knowledge gain further knowledge of the seasons. A dark sky is the sign of a storm, a blush the sign of a thought, etc. Qualities, as Peirce was at such pains to argue, are signs. But I mean something more. I mean that qualities indicate something about themselves and do not merely point to other objects, although they do that as well.

28 PART I: COPING WITH KNOWLEDGE qualities are experienced as concrete and in the present; but, being themselves classes, free us from the limitations of the concrete and the present. The sensations of similar experiences in the past are added by classes to the sensations in the present, endowing them with tremendous affective power. The degree of rationality involved in perception, the fact that it can take place only in terms of universals, has been read as an argument for idealism, as for instance by Blanchard.
