Little over 800 KC-135s were built till 1965. Now the KC-135 has been supplemented by the larger version KC-10. The McDonnell Douglas (currently Boeing) KC-10 tanker is the military version of the three-engine DC-10 airliner and was introduced in 1981 to the USAF. A total of 60 KC-10s were built till 1987. The KC-46 is the latest aerial refueling tanker, derived from the B767 jetliner. In 2011, Boeing received a contract from the USAF to build the KC-46, which will replace it, the oldest KC-135s.

Due to business globalization, major large components of the aircraft are being manufactured by outside partners from all over the world. The aircraft manufacturers do the final integration and assembly in their own facility before the aircraft goes for flight test. Various materials and manufacturing technologies are involved in fabrication of aircraft components to build an aircraft. It starts with the design and drawing of the individual part. The design engineer will assign the proper material selection and manufacturing processes including the final finishes on the part.

4 Military Aircraft Product and History Military aircraft can be classified in the following categories: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. S. 855 Note: A: Airbus, B: Boeing. In May, 1944, the B-29 Superfortress, a four-engine propeller-driven heavy bomber, was introduced by Boeing to the United States Air Force (USAF). In 1946, the United States Army Air Forces used B-29s in World War II. Two years later, in 1948 after World War II, the B-50, and a revision of the B-29 was introduced.
