What is it, anyway? " He tried another spoonful of soup. "Have you had many bouts of it? Those tablets in your medicine chest…" "I picked it up on that damned island. " she persisted. " "What do the doctors say? " "They don't know. With any luck the bouts will get less severe and eventually stop entirely. But I haven't been a real lucky man lately," he added derisively. "Unless you want to count last night, of course. I haven't thanked you for that, have I? I realize I might not have been at my best under the circumstances, but then, you didn't give me much notice.

In spite of the uneasy pact between herself and Julian, she was going to get mauled occasionally. The beast was still very dangerous. She wondered bleakly if he even realized just how much damage he could do to her. She was only beginning to realize how vulnerable she was. "I didn't want to use you, Julian," she whispered. " He threw her a laconic smile. "Let's think of the arrangement as a bargain then, hmmm? I'll do my best to help you implement Mike's plan and in return…" She slanted him a wary glance.

She was trembling with outrage and a carefully imposed self-restraint. The last thing she wanted was to allow Julian to provoke a full-scale argument and that was what he was clearly bent on doing. He'd tried first to bait her with reminders of last night's passion, and then he was obviously intent on making her scheme appear foolish and unworkable. She had better learn that any opening she gave him for communication was an avenue he would twist for his own purposes. It was as she washed out the soup bowl that she admitted to herself that she had really wanted his advice.
