For example, in a study by Gunsett and colleagues (1989), 9 out of 12 residents living in an institution, who had developed severe behavioural problems in adulthood, were found to have undiagnosed medical conditions, including fractures, urinary tract infections and toxic levels of anticonvulsants. Many never seem to recognise the importance of ‘fitting in’ with their peer group, and may continue to speak in the same style and accent as their parents, regardless of the social environment. This can be a particular problem for adolescents, who fail to appreciate that speaking in a different accent or style from their peers is very likely to result in bullying, teasing or rejection.
