And I ask myself: how much might this have to do with class? From the perspective of class, the problem is clear. Without the language to formulate the right questions, I could not see that what was glaringly necessary for my work to progress was feminist theory. Therefore I was not able to approach my tutors and ask to be pointed in the right direction. It is like being lost, without realizing that one is lost, and therefore not asking for directions. For me, this is such a class thing. I did not simply lack the cultural capital to challenge the syllabus or the tutors, I did not even realize there was a case to be made for such a challenge to take place.

JANET PARR 43 Conclusion So to what extent has my working-class background helped in my research into the experiences of mature women returners to further and higher education? I have been able to use only small sections of a limited number of the women’s stories. However, much of what all students said reflected my own life as a woman with working-class origins. I am sure that my own experiences facilitated a deeper understanding and an empathy with the women with whom I talked. However, I cannot extricate class background from my gender—both were influential on my life and beneficial in the research, as was my experience as a mature woman returner to education.

People don’t realize how hard you have to fight. It’s the way that I escape the unfairness I suppose. This student clearly feels the influence of neighbourhood norms. She talked to me freely, assuming my understanding. A childhood in a similar neighbourhood is helpful, but so, I am sure, was the fact that I am also a woman. Jenny had moved into this neighbourhood when she married, pregnant at 16, and has been fighting the control since then. Dilys and Sheila, though, were faced with restrictive situations in their childhood, but again accepted this as normal, if unfair, at the time.
