Indeed, both of these characteristics have been variously mentioned by philosophers as components that help provide a life its meaning. Let’s start with the activities aspect. Although some may deny that activities of some sort are absolutely required for a meaningful life, it again seems uncontroversial that engaging in certain activities can help provide one’s life with ultimate meaning. Interestingly, even some of those who deny there is any meaning to life at all (called “nihilists”) often counsel activity since it at least helps one not think about what they take to be a meaningless life.

In a pinch, I could use it as a paperweight or as a backscratcher, or even to make a point in a philosophy essay. Exactly what it is now depends upon what I need it for, and that depends upon who I am and how I relate to the world around me. The fact that I’m a philosophy professor means hammers are generally much more useful to me as examples when talking about Heidegger than they are for pounding things. But sometimes they are useful for that too. Ever since we’ve had kids, I’ve had to do more home improvement projects.
